Facts at a Glance-- Quick answers for the basic questions.

Program Selection Process

Following the October 1 submission deadline, members of the anesthesia nursing program admission’s subcommittee will review submitted materials. Applicants will be initially screened on the basis of their overall academic achievements, personal statement, experience, references, and demonstrated ability in science courses. The admissions subcommittee will decide who will progress to candidacy based on the applicant’s overall standing in relationship to the other applicants.

Selected applicants will be notified of their progress to candidacy status during early October. Those selected applicants will then be required to come to Iowa City for an interview at their own expense. All interviews will be conducted at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on the Friday in November prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. The interview day begins at 9:00 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. The interview includes a description of the program, lunch with some of the current students in order to gain their perspective of the program, and a series of interviews during which the applicant will meet with several faculty members, the medical advisor, and the program director.

The anesthesia nursing program's admission subcommittee meets in late November to decide the composition of next fall’s class. Decisions are based on the submitted information and the proceedings of the interview. Following the recommendation by the anesthesia nursing program’s admission subcommittee, application information will be reviewed by the College of Nursing Graduate Admissions Subcommittee. Final decisions will be made, and all applicants will be notified prior to December 15. Those applicants recommended for admission will have two weeks in which to complete and return an Intent to Enroll Form for the DNP degree with a specialization in anesthesia nursing at The University of Iowa.

Financial Information

Financial Aid

Taxable stipends and limited traineeships providing partial tuition support are expected to be available. The stipend is offered on a year-by-year basis in an effort to aid the student while pursuing educational endeavors in the clinical settings. The existence of this stipend is reviewed on an annual basis prior to the start of a new group of students. Nurse anesthesia traineeships funded by the federal government are limited to students beyond the first twelve-months of study. The program applies annually for these funds with funding level and guarantee of support varying year-to-year. Low-interest bank loans provide additional financial assistance.
